Kirk MacGeachy comes from the town of Anstruther, a fishing village on
the shores of the river forth on the east coast of scotland. Encouraged by
his mother who plays piano and father who loves to sing, Kirk began to
sing at an early age.
His involvement with traditional music dates back to high school where
he started performing, with his sisters and brother in the folk-clubs scene.
This interest continued during time spent at university in Edinburgh where
he was influenced by the revival in Scottish traditional Music.
After moving to Canada to study marine geology and biology at McGill, he
continued to pursue his musical interests. He founded and fronted a string
of Montreal-based celtic bands (celtic conspiracy, favourite Dram, Brahan seer)
which culminated in the formation of Orealis in 1986.
He has been the driving force behind Orealis for the past 15 years. His rich
tenor voice makes the Orealis sound and his solid guitar and bouzouki guitar
accompaniment provides the ground on which the band buiklds its sound.
Kirk is becoming increasingly well known as a solo-artist having performed
during the past few summersat festivals and clubs both in Canada and his
native Scotland. His ability as a writer of contemporary songs is evident on
his solo album debut 'Moon on the Ocean'.
